Week 7 – Don’t Jump
to Conclusions…
I recently had an e-mail exchange I was skeptical about. I
did my research carefully before making any sort of commitment. ALWAYS USE
CAUTION when dealing with unknown sources. This is the exchange:
Dear
QTHJ,
My name
is Tyler Stainer, Head of Artists Relations at Maek. I’m contacting you because we would like you to perform at DayTrip Music Festival.
Instead
of recycling the same generic mainstream headline acts, DayTrip Music
Festival spotlights 100 of the freshest faces in electronic music. Over
20,000 people will come together at Redmoon in Chicago, IL throughout four
consecutive Sundays this summer. Starting May 24th, music lovers will
experience one of the most refreshing festivals ever designed.
The
festival includes:
• Three stages
• An outdoor skate park
• A basketball ½ court
• A 1000 sqft ball pit
We have
been following your career and are huge fans of your work. Maek believes
you would be the perfect addition to the festival lineup. We want to put you
center stage at one of the coolest electronic music festivals of the summer:
There is
no monetary compensation.
However,
we will provide you with artist benefits:
• List your name on our lineup posters
and flyers that will be distributed throughout the midwest
• Share your music and social links on
the DayTrip Music Festival Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
• Promote your music to EDM music
blogs and radio stations around the country that we have relationships with
• Feature a profile of you on our
official website
• Allow you to sell merchandise on
site and keep 100% of profits
• Create a video trailer of you in
action
• Provide you with professional photos
for your own promotional use
In
addition to this, Maek will sign several artists to our label.
Let me
know if you are interested and we can set up a conference call this week. We
are making a lineup announcement on April 1st and it would be great to include
your name.
Sincerely,
Tyler Stainer

My Reply:
Hello Tyler-
We have received your request to have QTHJ perform at your event,
DayTrip Music Festival. After reviewing the projections in your e-mail we are
excited to hear more about this event. The plans are quite ambitious though,
and we do have some questions for you.
Who are the sponsors for this event?
Have you obtained the appropriate licenses and legal clearance?
What is the target demographic you are expecting for this festival?
How large will the stage productions be? (i.e. Array Sound System?
Lighting?)
What Set Times / Stage are you offering QTHJ?
If you could let us know the answers to those questions above it
would be greatly appreciated, as we feel these are important in our decision
making.
Thank you for reaching out to QTHJ for your event, we look forward
to hearing back from you.
Best Regards-
QTHJ Management Team
How do you think I handled this situation? Would you have
handled it differently?
